This is a question we hear all the time while we are servicing air conditioners. Truth be told, many of the heater and air conditioner repairs that we are called to do, are a direct result of a dirty air filter or air flow restriction that has caused a mechanical failure.

Before we go on to discuss what air filters we recommend and why, let’s discuss airflow restriction. Airflow is needed to pass through the condenser as well as any returns you have. When these get plugged up by dirt or anything else, it becomes harder for your system to work because your system needs to run harder to pull that air that is not freely moving. When airflow is restricted it causes premature wear and tear on your system and it’s parts.
Now that you have a brief description on airflow and your system, lets discuss the different kinds of air filters you may have seen sold.
- There is those really thick and cloth-like filters that may say you only have to change them every 60 or 90 days.
- There are air filters that look similar to a steel wool scouring pad. These may be sold as reusable and washable.
- There are green air filters.
- There are white air filters.
- There are probably air filters out there we have yet to see…

What we recommend is…
We don’t focus on the brand, color or cost. What we recommend is air filters that you can somewhat see through, air filters that air can pass easily through. Next we recommend you change them at least once a month and after every storm. Doing this alone will prolong the life of your entire HVAC system.
Most often these air filters are sold in bundles, as well as by themselves. Typically they are the cheapest air filters.

Price doesn’t always mean quality!
